Portsmouth City Council is inviting residents, businesses, visitors and community groups to take part in a consultation about the use of public barbecues (BBQs) and amplified music in some of the city’s most popular seafront open spaces.

The consultation covers Canoe Lake, Southsea Common and Castle Field and aims to gather views on how these spaces are used, the benefits they provide and any concerns people may have experienced. Information gathered will help inform future discussions about the management of these areas.

People are being asked about a range of issues, including outdoor recreation, community use, litter, noise, impacts on wildlife and the management of designated BBQ areas. No decisions have been made and the council is seeking feedback to better understand local views and experiences.

Councillor Lee Hunt, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Leisure & Sport, said: “Portsmouth’s seafront spaces are enjoyed by thousands of residents and visitors throughout the year. We know people have a wide range of views about public BBQs and amplified music, and we want to better understand those views before considering any future approach.

“This consultation is about listening. No decisions have been made and we are keen to hear from people who use these spaces regularly, as well as those who live nearby, work nearby or visit occasionally.

“I would encourage anyone with an interest in these areas to take a few minutes to complete the survey and help shape future discussions.”

The consultation includes questions about current arrangements, the benefits BBQs bring to public spaces, issues people may have experienced and possible future management measures.
