A man from Denton, Tameside was sentenced for murder at Manchester Crown Court following an investigation into the death of Michael McDermott in 1994.

Reporting restrictions were in place at the time of sentencing in March this year, but after being lifted at a hearing today, we are now able to report the outcome.

Robert Lloyd (08/01/1973) has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 17 years earlier this year, after a murder investigation was reopened when our Major Incident Team secured new evidence in October 2025.

Michael Kenneth McDermott (26) was attacked on 9 November 1994 at a family member’s house on Ashville Terrace, Moston.

It is believed that a group of suspects, including Lloyd, forced their way into the address, and carried out a brutal attack on Michael. Michael sustained a number of injuries from this attack and tragically died from his injuries.

Following the new development in the case over 30 years after Michael’s tragic death, officers were able to arrest Lloyd and reinvestigate the case, with the aim to identify others responsible and bring them to justice.

Detective Inspector Rachel Smith, from our Major Investigation team said: “Michael’s death 30 years ago was devastating for his loved ones and has left unanswered questions ever since.

“Whilst our investigation into this attack continues, it is my hope that Michael’s family feels a sense of reassurance and peace after this sentencing. They continue to be supported by specialist officers.

“Our investigation into the circumstances of Michael’s tragic death are very much active, and I urge anyone with information to please come forward. I can assure you, it’s not too late.”
