Public Consultation Launched: Should Fareham Be Split? Have Your Say!

Last Updated: July 11, 2025By

Fareham Borough Council is urging residents to speak up about proposed boundary changes that could see parts of the Borough separated into a different authority.

In response to a Government requirement for councils across England to reorganise, all existing councils in Hampshire – including Hampshire County Council and Fareham Borough Council – are expected to be replaced in the coming years.

A new Strategic Mayoral Authority will be created to cover Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, alongside several new Unitary Authorities that will take over the services currently provided by both county and local councils.

Fareham Borough Council is working with Gosport, Havant and Portsmouth councils to propose a single Unitary Authority that includes all four areas. This new authority would manage a wider range of services, including:

  • Education and schools

  • Roads and transport

  • Social care — responsibilities that are currently handled by Hampshire County Council.

However, there is a proposal being considered by some parties to split Fareham, with the wards of Locks Heath, Park Gate and Sarisbury potentially moving to a different Unitary Authority with Southampton and Eastleigh.

To ensure residents’ views are heard, Fareham Borough Council has launched a public consultation, open until 8 August.
