Memorial bench to offer place to remember everyone affected by the COVID-19 pandemic
A dedicated memorial bench is set to be unveiled in Basingstoke next week to remember everyone in the borough affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In March 2020, the country went into lockdown. Throughout the pandemic, communities across the borough came together to deliver supplies, support neighbours, volunteer at test and vaccination centres and adapt to a new and uncertain reality to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
To commemorate loved ones lost in Basingstoke and Deane and to recognise the impact and sacrifices made by key workers, volunteers and residents, a memorial bench has been installed in War Memorial Park.
Residents are being invited to a community unveiling of the bench, led by the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Cllr Colin Phillimore, at 6pm on Tuesday 12 August 2025.
The bench, which features people of all ages to symbolise the unity and strength of the borough’s communities, provides a poignant reminder and peaceful place where residents can reflect on the pandemic.
The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Cllr Colin Phillimore said: “The pandemic was a truly awful time for so many in our borough and the impact continues to be felt, particularly for those who lost loved ones and were unable to see and say goodbye and those living with long-term effects of the virus.
“During this challenging and uncertain time, we saw the very best of our communities, from frontline workers to volunteers and neighbours supporting family and friends with essential items, acts of kindness and a friendly face on the doorstep or on the phone.
“It was important for us to acknowledge this difficult time for our borough and the sacrifices made during the pandemic. The dedicated memorial bench is a symbol of remembrance, gratitude and hope and a place where everyone affected by the pandemic can reflect.”
