Bric-a-brac wanted: Wiltshire Council encourages residents to support reuse at recycling centres

Last Updated: August 10, 2025By

Wiltshire Council is encouraging everyone to support a growing ‘reuse’ initiative which is already delivering notable results.

Kennet Furniture Refurbiz (KFR), in partnership with Wiltshire Council and FCC Environment, opened a Reuse Shop at their unit on Hopton Industrial Estate in Devizes in February 2025. The shop accepts a wide range of donated goods from FCC recycling centres, including small items such as bric-a-brac (e.g. small household items and ornaments).

KFR refurbishes and resells donated goods, offering a wide range of affordable and unique items. From furniture to household essentials, the reuse shop provides quality items ready for a new home.

Since opening and up to the end of June 2025, over 21 tonnes of material have been reused or diverted from Wiltshire’s Household Recycling Centres (HRCs), giving a second life to around 1,850 items.

To build on this success, the council is encouraging residents to continue donating reusable items and to consider choosing refurbished or unique items by visiting the Reuse Shop. Reuse donation points can be identified by the orange bicycles displayed at each site, and staff are on hand to assist with any queries.

Reusing items helps reduce waste, supports local employment, and contributes to a more sustainable Wiltshire. Every donation plays a part in protecting the environment and supporting the local economy.

Daniel Thompson, Operations Manager at KFR, said: “We’re proud to be working alongside FCC and Wiltshire Council at the Household Recycling Centres. Every item we can save from going to waste is one less item that needs to be manufactured again, helping the environment and offering affordable goods to those who need them most. We’re always on the lookout for smaller items of bric-a-brac, the little touches that help turn a house into a home. Big or small, we’ll make sure that good, reusable items don’t go to waste.”

Toby Goodwin, Reuse Development Manager at FCC Environment, said “We’re proud to be working alongside Wiltshire Council and KFR to make reuse a convenient and accessible option for residents across the country. Our teams on the ground are key to the success of this project; by setting aside quality goods for the Reuse Shop, we’re helping to prioritise reuse over disposal and support a local charity in the process.”

Cllr Paul Sample JP, Cabinet Member for Environment, Climate and Waste, said: “This initiative is a great example of what can be achieved when we work with communities and partner organisations to reduce waste.

By keeping useful items in circulation, we cut emissions, lower costs for residents, and reduce the amount of material taken to household recycling centres that goes to landfill.

So whether it’s a chair, lamp or ornament, we’d encourage everyone to think reuse first – and donate it at one of our household recycling centres. And if you’re looking for something unique or affordable, pay a visit to the shop and pick up a bargain on bric-a-brac or white goods the next time you’re in Devizes.”
