Trowbridge leisure centre begins to take shape

Major construction work on Trowbridge’s new flagship leisure centre is gathering pace, with the installation of the steel frame set to transform the local skyline.

Once complete, the frame will comprise more than 993 pieces of steel, weighing approximately 246 tonnes, and will take around 35 days to erect.

The initial phase of construction has seen the project’s contractors completing complex groundwork to map out, remove or divert existing services and pipework beneath the East Wing site, followed by the excavation of what will be the main swimming pool and learner pool areas.

Once the steel structure is in place, work will begin to install the flooring and roof deck, followed by the external wall cladding later in the year. The leisure centre will be constructed using high-quality, robust materials, featuring glazed facades and a prominent entrance to welcome visitors. The modern design will have a strong industrial aesthetic that reflects the heritage of Trowbridge. Internally, accessibility has been put at the heart of the design plans.

Cllr Mel Jacob, Cabinet Member for Communities, Engagement, and Corporate Services, said: “We’ve reached an exciting milestone in the development of Trowbridge’s new leisure centre. After months of essential groundwork, we’re now entering the phase where the vision becomes a reality, and the people of Trowbridge can really start to see their new leisure centre take shape.

“This centre, once complete, will be a transformative asset for the town and surrounding communities, providing modern, accessible facilities that promote health, wellbeing, and connection.

“We’re very excited to see progress on-site and will keep people updated as this project continues.”

The new facility will offer a six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, a learner pool, two fitness studios, a gym with 120 stations, a café, and an adventure play area. A dedicated Live Well suite will provide tailored exercise space for older adults, supporting active lifestyles across all age groups.

To support the council’s target of being carbon neutral by 2030, the project has been designed with a fabric first approach to ensure it will be as energy efficient as possible. Solar panels will be installed on available roof space, helping to power the all-electric building.

This will be further supported by the external landscaping that will create a green island in Trowbridge with walking, cycling and wheeling travel routes woven in.

The council is also improving the nearby Longfield Gyratory, Cradle Bridge, and surrounding junctions in Trowbridge to make it safer for both pedestrians and cyclists to access the new leisure centre, while also improving traffic flow and reduce congestion – with work due to be completed spring 2026. More information can be found at Longfield Gyratory, Trowbridge – Wiltshire Council.

The new leisure centre is being constructed by Pellikaan Construction and our development partner Alliance Leisure, and further updates on the project’s progress will be made available to the public throughout the construction.
