Gearing up to Carers Rights Day 2025
Dorset Council, in partnership with Our Dorset is proud to champion Carers Rights Day 2025 with a dynamic programme of events to celebrate and support unpaid carers.
This year’s theme, “Know your rights, use your rights”, highlights the growing recognition of carers’ contributions and the legal rights that help them balance work, care, and wellbeing.
Cabinet Member for Adults Steve Robinson said: “All our unpaid carers deserve recognition for what they do day in day out.
And this year we’re keen to make sure that these valued individuals are aware of their rights and care for themselves, so they can care for others.
By signing up to an event, they’ll benefit from expert advice, guidance on their rights as carers, details of local services, and opportunities to connect with others.”
Rights in the workplace include the right to take up to five days of unpaid leave per year to care for someone with long-term needs and the right to request flexible working arrangements from day one of employment.
Carers can also access vital health-related support to maintain their own health and wellbeing by registering with their GP as a carer or request a free flu jab, especially if they receive Carer’s Allowance or care for someone older or disabled.
To access support and information when you want to, Dorset Council also offers Bridgit, a free online self-help platform available 24/7.
Bridgit provides personalised advice, guidance, and local resources tailored to carers’ needs. You can also access the Dorset Carer Friendly ID Card, start a Carer Assessment in your own words or find out about local organisations to offer support.
