Surrey Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to look out for vulnerable people this winter
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service has launched its new “You’re Their Person” campaign, calling on relatives, friends, neighbours, carers and frontline workers to help protect vulnerable people this winter by referring them for a free Safe and Well Visit.
The campaign follows insights from previous fatal fire investigations, which revealed that every person who tragically lost their life had someone who cared for them or checked in on them. Surrey Fire and Rescue Service hopes to raise awareness of the thousands of Safe and Well Visits carried out each year, ensuring more people who may be at risk receive essential support.
A Safe and Well Visit is a free, personalised home-safety assessment delivered by firefighters and dedicated prevention staff. During the visit, the team provides tailored fire safety advice, checks and installs smoke alarms, develops escape plans, and shares practical tips to reduce fire risks. The visit can also include guidance on wider wellbeing concerns, such as preventing falls, improving home security, and linking residents with additional local support services where needed.
David Nolan, Area Commander for Prevention at Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, said:
“Many of us know someone who may be vulnerable at home—whether due to age, disability, health, or their living situation. The ‘You’re Their Person’ campaign asks everyone in Surrey to stop and think about who depends on them. It might be an elderly neighbour living alone, a parent, or someone who cares for others. By checking in and referring them for a Safe and Well Visit, you could help prevent a tragedy. Let’s work together to keep our communities safe. Everyone has a person—make sure you’re there for yours.”
