Southampton City Council’s IDVA Service maintains its Leading Lights accreditation

Last Updated: November 30, 2025By

Southampton City Council is proud to announce that it has been awarded Leading Lights accreditation once again. This recognition, granted by national charity SafeLives, confirms that the council’s Independent Domestic Violence Advisory (IDVA) Service delivers safe, effective, and high-quality support to victims and survivors of domestic abuse.

The service provides emotional and practical support to victims and survivors. The team deal with everything from exploring safe housing options, and in-depth safety planning, to supporting people through different court processes. Each advisor advocates with and on behalf of the survivor with the aim of reducing the risk posed by those who harm and making sure the survivor and family are safe and able to recover and rebuild their lives. IDVAs work with many different agencies to support the family.

The Leading Lights programme sets rigorous standards across four key areas:

  • Service Provision
  • Multi-Agency Working
  • Human Resources
  • Governance

This accreditation also demonstrates that colleagues are committed to continuous improvement. It reassures commissioners, funders, and the public that accredited agencies operate to the highest standards of safety and care.

Domestic abuse remains a critical issue affecting individuals and families nationwide. By achieving Leading Lights accreditation, Southampton City Council joins over 130 accredited services across the UK, reinforcing its commitment to empowering survivors and reducing harm. Southampton City Council is committed to creating a Safer Southampton, which is one of the five priorities in its Corporate Plan. The aim is to reduce violent crime and anti-social behaviour, safeguard vulnerable individuals, and foster a city where everyone feels safe and supported.

The news of the accreditation comes as the local authority marks White Ribbon Day and 16 Days of Action Against Gender-Based Violence. During this time, Southampton City Council is raising awareness, sharing resources, and encouraging communities to take the White Ribbon Promise: Never commit, excuse, or remain silent about men’s violence against women and girls.

Robert Henderson, Executive Director Community Wellbeing, Children & Learning (DASS & DCS) at Southampton City Council, said: “We are delighted to receive this accreditation, which reflects the dedication of our team to provide inclusive, trauma-informed support. This milestone strengthens our ability to work collaboratively with partners and ensures survivors receive the best possible care. Congratulations to all our colleagues who work in the IDVA Service.”

Councillor Toqeer Kataria, Cabinet Member for Communities and Safer City at Southampton City Council, said: “I’d like to pass on my thanks and congratulations to the IDVA Service as this is an impressive achievement. We’re proud of our colleagues for the work they do in supporting vulnerable people. It’s great that the Leading Lights programme has recognised this.”
