Bookings open today for half‑term activities offering fun and food for Island families

Bookings have opened today (Wednesday) for a wide range of February half‑term activities that provide both exciting experiences and a nutritious meal for children and young people across the Island.

The popular programme is funded through the government’s Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) initiative, with additional support from the Isle of Wight Council through the Household Support Fund (HSF).

Free places are available for children and young people who receive benefits‑related free school meals, while paid‑for places are also being offered.

Thanks to extra HSF funding, eligibility has been expanded to include families receiving Universal Credit who do not meet the usual income‑related free school meal criteria.

The scheme is also open to children and young people with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), those supported by social care services, and children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). All HAF activities are fully inclusive.

This year’s programme features a wide variety of options, including football, horse riding, farm‑based activities, music, cheerleading, dance, circus skills, cooking, multi‑sports and multi‑activity holiday clubs. Activities will run from Monday 16 February to Friday 20 February.

However, the council is urging families to book early to avoid disappointment.

Councillor Paul Brading, chair of the council’s children’s services, education and skills committee, said school holidays often bring added financial pressures.

“Many families struggle financially during the school holidays, coping with the increased costs of food and childcare, while perhaps also living off a reduced income,” he said.

“This scheme exists to support these households, while offering children new opportunities and experiences that they may not have otherwise been able to access.”
