The Mayor of Guildford honours the work of incredible volunteers across the borough
On Saturday afternoon (14 March 2026) the Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Howard Smith, hosted a special award ceremony for recipients of the Mayor’s Award for Service to the Community 2026. The event celebrated the remarkable volunteers across Guildford borough who selflessly give their time to strengthen and enrich our local community.
In total 27 individuals and organisations received a Mayor’s Award for Service to the Community 2026. These volunteers are widening access to sport, arts and culture, improving health and wellbeing, protecting the environment, and strengthening local democracy.
Many of those honoured on the day have been volunteering for decades so that children, families, and older or vulnerable members of their communities can take part in activities, feel included in society, and remain healthy. Volunteering reaches across all generations, with this year’s youngest award recipient being just five years old. He volunteers with his father litter picking to help keep their neighbourhood clean.
Cllr Howard Smith, Mayor of Guildford, said: “Where would our communities be without the dedication and commitment of volunteers like these? From weekly sessions to monthly groups and seasonal events these individuals work tirelessly for the good of our communities.
“It’s incredible to discover that many of those receiving awards this year have been actively volunteering for over 20 years, continuing traditions and supporting organisations over many decades.
“I know these individuals do not seek recognition for the work that they do, but it is clearly appreciated. I’m pleased that today we can publicly recognise the positive difference they’re making in Guildford borough.”
Citations for each nomination were read out at the awards ceremony. As well as the individual awards, this year The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre received an award on behalf of their 85 volunteers. They each contribute around 12 hours per month to support audience members.
Sally Anne Lowe, the Director of Marketing and Customer Experience, said in praise of these volunteers at Yvonne Arnaud: “We can’t thank our amazing volunteers enough. Whether working multiple pantomime shifts with endless humour and energy, handing out leaflets in the High Street, turning the wardrobe store into a place people can actually find things, or being the friendly face at Pop Up Play, we couldn’t do it without you.
“You look after customers with grace, sometimes in demanding circumstances, and are the best ambassadors for the theatre we could wish for.
“Thank you from everyone at the Yvonne Arnaud.”
After the formal proceedings, award recipients enjoyed a musical performance from singer Karl Sonoy. They were then treated to tea and cakes, courtesy of The County Club, which supported this year’s award ceremony.
Julian Bounds, General Manager of the County Club said: “The County Club is immensely proud to sponsor The Mayor’s Awards for Service to the Community again this year, recognising the best of humanity in our wonderful community.”
The full list of award recipients is on the Council’s website.
