Fridays just got tastier with new city centre street food market

A new street food market launching in Portsmouth city centre will help support local businesses and increase footfall to Commercial Road. Foodie Fridays launches on Friday 27 March, from 10am to 4pm, bringing a mix of hot street food traders to Commercial Road as part of Portsmouth City Council’s refreshed Portsmouth Markets programme.

The new market will run monthly on pay‑day Fridays, giving residents, workers and visitors a regular reason to spend time in the city centre, while creating new trading opportunities for independent food businesses. Expected street food traders include Thai noodles, loaded jacket potatoes, crepes, shawarma and burgers with options for vegetarians and vegans. Plus, fresh fruit and vegetables.

Councillor Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council with economic responsibilities said: “Our market plays an important role in supporting local businesses and bringing people into our city centre. Foodie Fridays is a simple idea that does both. It helps independent traders reach new customers while giving people another reason to spend time and money locally.”

Foodie Fridays is part of a wider programme of markets and events introduced following the relaunch of Portsmouth Markets, which aims to strengthen the local economy by supporting small businesses, increasing footfall and creating lively, welcoming high streets across the city. This street food market will sit alongside other markets and events taking place across Commercial Road, Cosham High Street and Southsea, all designed to create a strong, year‑round offer for residents and visitors.
