Young Islanders feel the beat at accessible Isle Rave

Families gathered at the Riverside Centre on Saturday for Isle Rave — a lively and inclusive event designed for deaf and visually impaired children and young people from across the Island.

The day was organised by the Isle of Wight Deaf Children’s Association, the Saturday Club for Deaf Children, and the Isle of Wight Council’s Specialist Teacher Advisory (STA) Team, who joined forces to create a fun and fully accessible experience.

Deaf Rave, known for championing deaf artists and performers, led the activities. The group has appeared at major festivals including Boomtown and Glastonbury and is recognised nationally for making music accessible to all.

Children, young people and their families took part in DJ and sign‑song workshops led by Matthew Taylor — better known as MC Geezer — and Jefferson Stone, known as DJ Jeffo.

A highlight of the day was the use of Woojer Vests, allowing participants to feel music through gentle vibrations and adding a new way for many to enjoy sound.

Local and national organisations supported the event with information stalls and activities, including Guide Dogs, Sight for Wight, Phonak and the National Deaf Children’s Society.

Students from St Catherine’s School, Ventnor, also helped raise funds with a well‑received cake and plant sale.

One parent said: “It was lovely to see so many children involved and engaged in learning something new. My son loved trying the Woojer Vest and DJ’ing. The day was empowering for the deaf and visually impaired community on the Island.”

Hannah Byers, STA team lead and qualified teacher of deaf children and young people, as well as an educational audiologist, said: “Isle Rave was a wonderful celebration of creativity, inclusivity and community.

“It was joyful to see children and young people working together with deaf artists and sharing the event with their families.

“We’re incredibly proud to have worked with our partners to bring this event to the Island.”
