The next phase of repairs to the community football pitch at Scarborough Sports Village has been welcomed as new images and drone footage show the early progress that is being made.

North Yorkshire Council has committed to securing the long-term future of the pitch at the home ground of Scarborough Athletic Football Club and Scarborough Ladies Football Club, with a package of repairs under way.

The current phase of the project involves construction company Willmott Dixon carrying out remedial works on the pitch structure, providing a stable base in preparation for the new surface to be laid.

Equipment was brought on site earlier this month, and the technical groundwork is now gathering pace.

This stage of repairs is expected to take between eight and 10 weeks to complete before the new pitch is installed ahead of the 2026/27 football season, which begins in August this year.

North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for leisure, Cllr Simon Myers, said: “It is encouraging to see the progress being made on site and I hope this provides reassurance to our communities and all pitch users that this project remains a priority for the council.

“From the outset, we have been clear in our commitment that that these repairs must be completed to a high standard, and as quickly as possible, to minimise the impact to those who rely on the pitch – especially to Scarborough Athletic and their supporters.

“Our aim remains to have the pitch back in use as soon as possible, and well ahead of the new football season.

“I would like to thank our communities for their ongoing cooperation, and I will continue to seek regular updates from the project team over the coming weeks.”

Willmott Dixon director Chris Yates said: “Our team is on site and making good progress with the remedial works.

“Scarborough Sports Village is an important community facility, and we are focused on completing the necessary works to ensure the pitch is ready ahead of the new season.”

A site survey conducted last year highlighted issues with the 3G pitch which need to be addressed before the new surface is laid.

As a result, the pitch is unavailable for competitive fixtures for the 2025/26 season.

While the pitch is unavailable, Scarborough Athletic is playing its home fixtures at Bridlington Town’s ground during the 2025/26 season.

The temporary ground share agreement was approved last year by the National League and the Northern Premier League.
