Portsmouth Park and Ride Commuters encouraged to ditch travel stress and connect better with convenient, affordable journeys

Portsmouth City Council is encouraging commuters travelling from the north of the city and beyond to switch to Portsmouth Park and Ride, highlighting how it can reduce travel, parking and financial pressures.

With fast, frequent PR1 buses running every 15 minutes from 7am on weekdays, commuters can enjoy a smooth trip into the city centre and The Hard, while saving on fuel and parking costs. For many, it means a calmer journey and more quality time at home at the end of the working day.

Since September 2024, Portsmouth Park and Ride has introduced a range of customer-focused improvements to make travelling even easier. A new mobile-friendly website puts fares, route maps and travel updates at passengers’ fingertips, while clearer onsite signage helps visitors move around the site confidently.

A simplified fare structure offers affordable travel options for regular and occasional users. The Flexipass 50 is particularly popular with commuters with costs averaging just £2.90 per day. Tickets can be bought and managed through the First Bus app, where customers can also track buses in real time and plan their journeys.

As more people choose to leave their car at the park and ride, Portsmouth benefits too, with less congestion on the roads and cleaner air across the city.

Cllr Peter Candlish, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “By listening to our customers, we’re shaping an affordable park and ride service that supports the way people want to travel. Those short bus journeys, whether spent enjoying a podcast, connecting with friends and family, or simply unwinding, can make a real difference to the start or end of the working day.

“Park and ride gives commuters the chance to relax, arrive at work or back home feeling more refreshed, ready for the people who matter. We’re encouraging anyone who hasn’t used the service recently, as well as those who’ve never tried it, to give it a go.”

Portsmouth Park and Ride is located just off Junction 1 of the M275. To learn more, including fare and timetable information, visit portsmouth.parkandride.gov.uk or follow Portsmouth Park and Ride on Facebook. You can also sign up for an occasional email with the  latest news.
