New accessible play space blends heritage and play
Work will begin next week on a new playground at Shaw House, giving families a fun and accessible space to enjoy together.
West Berkshire Council has announced that construction will start on Monday 8 June, with work continuing for just under two weeks. Funded through the Community Infrastructure Levy, the new play area is expected to open later this summer, offering more opportunities for relaxed family days out.
At its centre will be a ‘Great Hall’ play structure inspired by Shaw House’s historic architecture, encouraging imaginative play while connecting children to the site’s heritage, which dates back to 1581.
Situated on the old netball court, the playground will combine traditional equipment with inclusive features to support a wide range of needs. Sensory panels will provide quieter, accessible play, while a nest swing, accessible carousel and balance trails will encourage movement, confidence and shared experiences.
Designed to complement the historic setting, the space will use natural materials alongside durable, low-maintenance surfaces. Accessible paths and safety surfacing will ensure it is practical and welcoming for all.
Councillor Nigel Foot, Executive Member for Culture, Leisure, Sport and Countryside said: “This is a really exciting addition to Shaw House and a great boost for local families. It’s fantastic to be creating a space where children can play, explore and engage with the history of the house in a fun and imaginative way.”
Alongside the new play area, visitors will also be able to enjoy an enhanced catering offer, with freshly prepared paninis available from Gladys, the on-site catering trailer.
An opening celebration is being planned for the summer, with more information to be shared in due course.
The project forms part of a wider programme of improvements at Shaw House, including newly dressed rooms and the creation of Tudor and Edwardian gardens, helping to bring its history to life for visitors.
