Wiltshire shortlisted for two national transport awards
Wiltshire Council and its partners have been shortlisted for two prestigious national awards by the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), recognising innovation and impact in improving the county’s transport network.
The council has been shortlisted for the Road Safety Award for the A3102 Wiltshire Safer Roads Scheme, in partnership with AtkinsRéalis, and for the Resilience Award for Wiltshire’s Resilience in Adverse Weather, with M Group. The winners will be announced at a ceremony on 17 June.
The A3102 Wiltshire Safer Roads Scheme is one of the largest projects delivered through the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund.
The scheme takes a targeted approach to reducing the severity of road traffic collisions, with targeted improvements across a 22-mile route. It is expected to prevent around 45 fatal and serious injuries over 20 years, while also improving safety for vulnerable road users and trialling more sustainable materials.
Wiltshire’s Resilience in Adverse Weather programme focuses on improving how the highway network responds to increasingly severe weather, particularly more frequent winter storms.
By introducing a risk-based drainage management system, the project has moved maintenance from a reactive to a proactive approach, helping to reduce flooding, improve reliability and lower carbon emissions.
Both projects demonstrate the value of close partnership working, combining local knowledge, technical expertise and innovative approaches to deliver better outcomes for residents and road users.
Cllr Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “We’re pleased to see these two important projects recognised at a national level. Both schemes show how working closely with our partners enables us to deliver practical improvements that make a real difference to people across Wiltshire.
“The A3102 scheme is helping to make journeys safer for everyone, while our resilience work is ensuring the network is better prepared for challenging weather conditions. Being shortlisted reflects the commitment of everyone involved, and we hope we are successful at the awards ceremony.”
Luke Merchant, Project Manager at AtkinsRéalis, said: “We are delighted that the A3102 Wiltshire Safer Roads Scheme has been shortlisted for a CIHT Road Safety Award.
“This reflects the strong partnership between Wiltshire Council, AtkinsRéalis, M Group, its subcontractors, and the wider team in delivering one of the DfT’s flagship Safer Roads Fund schemes.
“An innovative data-led approach has delivered targeted improvements to reduce collisions and enhance safety for all users.
“Being shortlisted is a testament to the collaboration and commitment across the whole supply chain, and we’re proud to support Wiltshire Council in creating a safer network for local communities.”
Andy Emmett, Operations Manager at RK Bell, an M Group subcontractor working on the A3102 scheme, said: “The whole team at RK Bell is delighted to see the A3102 shortlisted for the CIHT Road Safety Award. This scheme is a great example of what can be achieved when client, designer and contractor work as one team, and we’re proud to have played our part in delivering a safer road for the community.”
Anne Roberts, Business Director, M Group, said: “We’re pleased to see Wiltshire’s resilience work recognised at a national level. This programme shows how working closely with our partners enables us to deliver practical improvements that make a real difference to communities across the county.
“Our focus on proactive gully and drainage management is helping the network withstand severe weather, reducing flood risk and improving reliability for road users.
“Delivered in collaboration with Wiltshire Council and KaarbonTech, this shortlisting reflects the commitment and expertise of everyone involved, and we hope to see that recognised at the awards ceremony.”
