Shared Lives Week 2026 – “It’s fun, flexible and makes a real difference”

As Shared Lives Week 2026 approaches, Wiltshire residents are being encouraged to consider a rewarding and flexible role supporting others to live independent and fulfilling lives.

Kathy and Steve West have been Shared Lives Carers for 11 years, opening their home to two young people and helping them build confidence, develop independence and a sense of belonging.

Their story highlights the unique benefits of Shared Lives – a role that fits around everyday life while making a meaningful and lasting difference to others.

Kathy said, “Shared Lives allows you to work from home and support someone in your own home as part of your daily life. You can fit it around other commitments depending on who you’re caring for, and you’re helping someone reach their full potential. It’s a great way to live.”

For Steve, the rewards go far beyond the practical benefits, “We get a lot of fun from it, and we feel part of a team. You meet a great group of like-minded people who want to do something meaningful. You’re making a real contribution, and the satisfaction you get from it is huge. I’d love more people to experience that.”

Shared Lives offers a flexible and rewarding caring role where you can:

  • Work from home while earning a competitive income
  • Make a genuine and lasting difference to someone’s life
  • Build meaningful relationships and be part of a supportive community
  • Fit caring around your lifestyle, whether you’re working, raising a family or retired

Cllr Clare Cape, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, said, “Shared Lives shows that care doesn’t have to happen in formal settings. It can happen in ordinary homes, where people can build relationships, feel part of a family and live as independently as possible.

“We are looking for more people from all walks of life to become Shared Lives Carers. You don’t need specific experience – just kindness, patience and a willingness to share your home. In return, you’ll receive training, ongoing support and competitive payments.

“Whether you’re working full-time, have a busy household or are looking for something new later in life, Shared Lives can fit around you.”

Shared Lives arrangements are carefully matched to ensure the right fit and can include day support, short breaks or longer-term care.  The service supports a wide range of people, including those with a learning disability, care-experienced young people, individuals experiencing mental ill health, and older people living with dementia.

During Shared Lives Week, the team will be out in communities to raise awareness and talk to people interested in becoming carers:

  • Chippenham High Street – Monday 15 June, 9am–1pm
  • Salisbury Library – Tuesday 16 June, 9am–1pm
  • Warminster Library – Friday 19 June, 9am–1pm

The team will also be holding a live Instagram Q&A session on Thursday 18 June between 6pm and 7pm providing an opportunity to ask questions about Shared Lives.

Could you share your home and change a life?
