Don’t put it off. Wiltshire residents urged to book life-saving cervical screenings

Last Updated: June 18, 2026By Tags: ,

cervical screenings highlights the importance of regular screening, and women in Wiltshire are encouraged to book and attend their appointment whenever they are invited

Cervical screening – often known as a smear test – checks for high‑risk HPV (Human Papillomavirus) and any changes in cervical cells that could develop into cancer if not treated early.

Early detection through cervical screening can save lives, yet many people still delay or avoid booking their appointment.

Wiltshire Council has worked with the NHS to produce a new awareness video designed to reassure people about what to expect during screening and encourage anyone who may be nervous or overdue for an appointment to come forward.

In the video Becky Park, a NHS nurse working in Wiltshire explains: “We know life gets busy and it’s easy to put things off, but if you’ve missed your cervical screening invite, now is the perfect time to take action. Every screening matters and yours could save your life.”

Cllr Clare Cape, Wiltshire Council Cabinet Member for Public Health and NHS Co-ordination said: “Cervical screening saves lives, and I would encourage everyone eligible for screening in Wiltshire to attend their appointment.

“Screening is one of the best ways to help prevent cervical cancer. We know some people may feel anxious or put it off for different reasons, so our new video has been created to help answer questions, reassure residents about the process, and support more women to feel confident about booking their test. If you’ve received an invitation, or missed your last appointment, please contact your GP practice as soon as possible.”

Approximately 3,000 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed in the UK every year, but and we know that regular screening and HPV vaccination are helping to reduce cases. Cervical screening is estimated to save 4,500 lives in the UK each year. Cervical cancer – UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC) – GOV.UK

Women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64 are eligible for cervical screening through the NHS programme. Anyone who has missed a previous appointment can still book at any time through their GP practice Cervical screening – NHS.
