Southampton City Council is bringing to market a former residential care home in Bitterne
Glen Lee’, a former residential care home in Wavell Road, Bitterne, is being marketed by Savills on behalf Southampton City Council as a new development opportunity.
The site is a former residential care home built in 1962, and which is currently vacant. It extends 1.72 acres (0.69 hectares) and has been assessed as surplus to requirements by the council through its Asset Development and Disposal Programme (ADDP).
The ADDP is a transformational five-year programme that aims to support the council’s growth agenda by delivering asset development and disposal opportunities as well as making decisions to retain assets where appropriate to do so. The aim of the programme is to ensure financial sustainability for the council as well as enable development and regeneration of our city. So far, the programme has already delivered around £21m in receipts.
The programme is being delivered in a phased approach, allowing the council to review each proposal individually and where appropriate make assets available that can support the city’s regeneration. Such properties act as a catalyst for growth, including the delivery of new homes, in line with the Southampton Renaissance Vision and the objectives of our first Growth and Prosperity Plan. In addition, releasing assets that are no longer needed will also reduce the costs of future repairs and maintenance.
The council is prioritising the marketing of this site as a development opportunity for housing primarily, with care, or nursing care including complex nursing care or extra care, but it will also consider other development proposals.
Councillor Sarah Bogle, Leader of Southampton City Council and portfolio holder for Growth, Prosperity and Culture, said: “The Asset Development and Disposal Programme is helping the council to manage our assets thoughtfully and with the future in mind. This particular site has been vacant for a significant length of time and by marketing the opportunity, we hope to allow a new owner to bring it back into use.”
The property will be marketed by Savills local appointed agents, and all enquiries should be made to them in the first instance.
