Caroline welcomes decision to uphold the complaint against former council leader

Dame Caroline Dinenage, Member of Parliament for Gosport, has welcomed the decision by Gosport Borough Council’s Monitoring Officer to uphold her complaint against former Liberal Democrat Council Leader Peter Chegwyn.

The complaint followed social media posts in which Councillor Chegwyn repeatedly accused Caroline of lying over arrangements for a meeting about the £20 million Pride in Place investment in Rowner.
The Monitoring Officer found that the accusation was “most unfair and unacceptable” and that the comments were “rude” and “abusive”.
He concluded that Councillor Chegwyn had failed to treat Caroline with respect and had brought his role and the Council into disrepute. He has been asked to remove the posts, apologise in writing, and undertake media training.

Caroline said: “I welcome this clear decision. Political disagreements are inevitable, but repeatedly and publicly accusing someone of lying is completely unacceptable.
“I thank the Monitoring Officer and council officers for their work and look forward to receiving the recommended apology.”
