Award-winning Let’s Glow returns to brighten up February
Basingstoke’s popular free Let’s Glow event returns to brighten up the darker evenings in Basingstoke’s Top of the Town and War Memorial Park this February.
Run by Love Basingstoke and funded by the council, visitors can explore the interactive, immersive and multi-sensory light trail during half-term between Thursday 19 and Saturday 21 February, from 6pm to 9pm.
Visitors can head to the area outside the Wote Street Club, where as they move or dance, their silhouettes will be projected onto the side of Festival Place and transform it into a glowing canvas of colour. A hop, skip and jump will then take visitors along Wote Street, where lights projected along the pavement will encourage them to turn the street into a playground.
The trees in Market Place will be brought to life with neon lights along the trunks and branches, as if they’ve grown the lights naturally. Visitors will be able to change the colours simply by pressing a button.
A laser will be bounced off mirrors from the Triumphal Gates creating a zig zag net of light over visitors’ heads as they walk along London Street.
War Memorial Park will again host the light walk, where visitors can experience different installations as they explore the park. Trees will be illuminated in vivid colours while ethereal background sound and music will be synchronised with each installation. Elsewhere, hundreds of LED flame lamps will be spread across the lawn and between trees, to evoke warmth on chilly February nights.
The bandstand will host a bank of interactive bubble tubes. Over two metres tall, each tube will respond to touch, changing colour as their glow illuminates the area around them. Visitors will see colour-changing giant reeds accompanied by music, and can be a light racer, where at the press of a button they can each guess which strip of lights winding across the park will reach the finish line first.
Visitors can walk through a laser field, where beams of light will shimmer through the branches of trees and fragment as they hit the ground, while a kaleidoscope of colour-changing butterflies will pulse, perched around those walking through the park.
Cabinet Member for Sports, Leisure and Culture Cllr Kerry Morrow said: “As one of our most popular events, Let’s Glow makes Basingstoke town centre a magical destination for people of all ages seeking light on dark February evenings.
“Let’s Glow brings friends and families together from across the borough and beyond to enjoy our town centre. I’m really looking forward to seeing the all-new light displays at this year’s spectacular event.”
More information, with any last-minute changes for weather conditions, will be shared through the Love Basingstoke social media channels and is available on the website at www.LoveBasingstoke.co.uk.
