Celebrating art and nature through one year of community projects
Nature lovers are invited to attend a free exhibition that is a ‘celebration of trees’ next week in Portsmouth
Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery is celebrating a year of community-led creativity with a special showcase of artwork inspired by nature and trees.
“Unlocking The Quietness of Feeling”, supported by Arts Council England, is a year-long project fostering community engagement through art and nature, in relation to The Quietness of Feeling (TQOF) exhibition (an exploration of trees through the art of Benjamin Haughton and the Arborealists), currently held at Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery.
Between August 2024 and July 2025, 2000 members of local communities participated in various events and activities in Portsmouth, including Ceme-Tree Art Club and Art in the Park sketching sessions, from attending an artist’s workshop to enjoying nature arts and crafts in community allotments.
To celebrate the project’s successful completion, Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery will host a celebration week showcasing the artistic creations developed through the year’s activities by the groups the museum team have worked with (Young Carers, Chat over Chai, Generate and HAVEN group from Portsmouth City of Sanctuary, Cross Cultural Women Group) together with local artists and performers (Alice Hume, Katie Munro & Ella Kilgour, Andrew Halliday, Annie Flitcroft, 432 NOMADS, Karen Townsend – Misty Ceramics, Abi Kremer) as well as other groups throughout the year (including Nature Watch groups, Mary Rose Academy Students, SEND Faces, adults with learning disabilities, participants from Art in the Park and Ceme-Trees events, carers).
From macrame trees to charcoal drawing, ceramic tiles to watercolour paintings, trees will be celebrated, and everyone is welcome to enjoy the wonderful community artwork produced.
This temporary artwork celebration will be displayed between Tuesday 26 and Saturday 29 August 2025, 10am until 4pm, in the activity room of Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery, Museum Road, PO1 2LJ. Free entry and parking available on the museum’s grounds.
