Celebrating the vital contributions of Southampton’s volunteers
Southampton City Council is delighted to celebrate and recognise the outstanding commitment and achievements of the volunteers who have partnered with our Ranger teams across the city.
Their enthusiasm, dedication and tireless efforts have played a crucial role in preserving Southampton’s beautiful green spaces for the benefit of all residents and visitors. In 2025, over 4,133 hours of volunteering was recorded. This is the equivalent of over two full-time members of staff.
Our volunteer programme is made up of a diverse range of groups, each contributing uniquely to the city’s parks, common land, and nature reserves:
- Green Volunteers: Meeting every Tuesday morning from 10:00 to 13:00, these volunteers work at various locations across Southampton, tackling a wide range of practical conservation tasks.
- Hawthorns Volunteers: Gathering every Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00 at the Hawthorns on The Common, helping with habitat management, practical conservation and maintenance of the Hawthorns grounds, as well as helping to prepare resources for community engagement events.
- Common Volunteers: Operating monthly on a Saturday between 10:00 to 14:00, this group focuses on practical conservation and seasonal maintenance on The Common.
- Young Rangers: Designed for young people aged 16-23, these sessions are held on Saturdays on the Common and at other times outside of term time, offering valuable opportunities for developing knowledge and skills in practical conservation and making new friends.
- Corporate Volunteering: Flexible and bespoke sessions for groups of five or more, allowing local businesses and organisations to give back as teams and make a visible impact on Southampton’s natural spaces.
Councillor John Savage, Cabinet Member for Green City and Environment, said: “The efforts of these volunteers are instrumental in enhancing biodiversity, supporting wildlife, maintaining safe and welcoming green areas, and fostering a sense of community pride. From planting trees and managing habitats to organising events and educating the public, their work ensures Southampton remains a vibrant, green city for generations to come.”
Southampton City Council encourages everyone interested in making a difference to get involved. To sign-up or further information, contact greenvolunteers@southampton.
