Falkland Gardens water fountain to be restored
Gosport’s Policy and Organisation Board has approved an £85,000 investment to refurbish the long‑standing water fountain at Falkland Gardens, ensuring the much‑loved feature is restored as a safe, modern and fully operational focal point for residents and visitors.
At its meeting on 11 March 2026, the Board agreed to allocate funding from the Local Regeneration Fund (LRF) to deliver a comprehensive refurbishment of the fountain, which has been out of operation for several years.
The fountain sits at the heart of Falkland Gardens, forming a prominent gateway to the town’s waterfront. While the structure remains an important landmark, its design, water treatment system and maintenance regime no longer meet modern standards. Much of the mechanical and filtration equipment has reached the end of its operational life which has resulted in the fountain not being in use for many years.
The approved works will:
- Modernise the fountain’s design and recirculating water system
- Replace outdated mechanical and filtration equipment
- Improve water quality management and long‑term maintainability
- Ensure compliance with current health and safety guidance, including the management of bacterial risks
- Enhance the appearance and reliability of the feature as part of the wider regeneration of the waterfront
The refurbishment will complement the People’s Park Phase One improvements, which have now begun.
Leader of Gosport Borough Council, Peter Chegwyn says: “I’m delighted that Gosport Council has been able to secure funding for the restoration of the Falkland Gardens fountain. This is a prominent feature on the Falkland Gardens of great sentimental value to Gosport residents especially those who lost loved ones during the Falklands conflict in 1982. Restoration works will start this summer and will be completed before the end of the year.”
The restoration work is being undertaken at no cost to Gosport taxpayers thanks to funding being secured from the Government’s Levelling-Up Fund.
