Final round of Portsmouth Match Fund: Helping local businesses grow

Last Updated: January 8, 2026By

Portsmouth City Council is calling on local businesses to seize the opportunity and apply for the final round of the Portsmouth Match Fund, a grant designed to help local start-ups and small businesses grow.

Since its launch in 2023, the Portsmouth Match Fund has invested £140,000 into 46 local businesses, enabling them to start, grow, and create jobs. In 2025 alone, 24 businesses received support worth over £75,000, matched by their own investment. Previous beneficiaries include A Little Bit Extra Ltd, Casemates Studios Ltd, Southsea Play Café, Blossom Boutique, Quick Dynamics Ltd, Alexandra Sports, and The Southsea Deli.

This initiative, funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, offers eligible Portsmouth businesses 20–50% funding (between £1,500 and £4,000) towards growth or start-up projects. Ideal uses include developing a new digital platform or e-commerce site, launching new products, purchasing equipment or investing in staff training.

Fratton-based bakery A Little Bit Extra used the grant to purchase a second cookie balling machine, dramatically increasing production capacity.

Caron Howe, Owner of A Little Bit Extra said: The Portsmouth Match Fund helped us scale up and meet growing demand,”

“With the second cookie machine our turnover has increased significantly. We’ve created three new baker roles and a business development manager, moved into a larger bakery at Victory Business Centre, and are ready for even more growth in 2026.”

Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of the Council with responsibilities for economic development, said: The Portsmouth Match Fund has made a real difference to local businesses. This final round is a fantastic opportunity for start-ups and small businesses to secure funding and grow. By working together, we can strengthen Portsmouth’s economy and create jobs. If you haven’t applied yet, now is the time.”

Applications close Sunday, 25 January 2026.
