First-Time Fly Fishing Trip Brings Success at Meon Springs After Nine-Month Break
A Hampshire angler has celebrated a successful return to fishing after a nine-month absence, marking the occasion with his first-ever fly fishing experience at Meon Springs Trout Fishery.
Kevin, who regularly fishes alongside his father-in-law, said the pair had not been out since 16 June last year — the traditional opening day of the river season — when they last fished in Southampton. Accustomed to fishing together once or twice a month, the extended break prompted Kevin to organise a long-overdue trip.
After what he described as “two weeks of persuasion,” his father-in-law agreed to return to the water. The pair opted to try fly fishing for trout, despite Kevin having no previous experience with the technique.
They selected Meon Springs Trout Fishery for the trip, arranging a catch-and-release day session. Staff at the venue cautioned that conditions could be challenging for beginners but offered guidance to help them get started.
Following an initial period of practising casting, Kevin admitted struggling with the unfamiliar method but praised the staff for their support. His efforts were rewarded when he successfully hooked and landed his first rainbow trout.
Although he noted the fish did not provide the same level of resistance as species he typically targets — such as conger eels and barbel — he described the catch as a significant personal milestone, particularly after expecting a difficult day.
The fishery’s setting also stood out, with Kevin comparing its peaceful surroundings to scenic stretches of the River Severn, where the landscape itself can make a trip worthwhile regardless of the catch.
His father-in-law also enjoyed success, landing a slightly larger trout and losing another, adding a friendly sense of competition to the outing.
Overall, the day was described as a success, combining relaxation, natural scenery, and rewarding fishing. Kevin noted the trip had a positive effect on his father-in-law’s mood and provided a welcome return to a shared pastime.
He added that Meon Springs is an ideal destination for anglers seeking a quieter experience, citing its affordability and on-site accommodation options, including rustic lodgings with outdoor cooking facilities.
The trip ultimately marked both a successful introduction to fly fishing and a long-awaited return to the sport for the pair.
