Game, Set… stroll! Walking Sports Festival proves popular
More than 90 people laced up their trainers and joined the fun at a Walking Sports Festival held at Melksham Community Campus over the weekend.
The free event, which took place on Sunday 13 July, was a celebration of inclusive, low-impact sport, giving people of all ages and abilities the chance to try out walking versions of tennis, rugby, football, netball, and badminton.
The day also featured Get Out Get Active (GOGA) sessions and a chance to try Pickleball – an increasingly popular sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis.
One of the participants, Derek, 76, summed up the spirit of the day: “An extremely well organised event offering a variety of walking sports so there was something for everyone to enjoy, whatever their ability. A very worthwhile and enjoyable day.”
Feedback collected from evaluation forms echoed these sentiments. One participant wrote: “Very well organised. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Plenty of different activities to try.” Another added: “I would just like to say a very big thank you to everyone who made the day possible. A very big thank you to the council for running the weekly sessions which made this weekend the success it was. Thank you to all the staff for their time and patience. Hopefully this will be the first of many.”
The event was run by the council’s Sports and Physical Activity team, with support from the Wiltshire FA, England Netball, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), and Melksham RFC, who all helped ensure the activities were engaging and accessible to everyone.
Cllr Mel Jacob, Cabinet Member for Communities, Engagement and Corporate Services said: “I was really excited to go along to the event at Melksham. It was fantastic to see so many people getting involved, having fun, and discovering new ways to stay active. Walking sports are a brilliant way to stay fit, meet new people, and enjoy the benefits of sport in a supportive environment.
“We are keen to promote healthier lives and to support our residents to look after their mental and physical wellbeing. Our brilliant Sport and Physical Activity team help to facilitate a growing number of walking sports and activities across Wiltshire every week – whether you are a seasoned player, recovering from an injury or just curious to try something new, please come and have a go! There is something for everyone.”
The event was open to disabled and non-disabled people of all ages, including those with long-term health conditions or mobility impairments, and anyone looking to try a new activity in a welcoming environment.
