Half term activities at The D-Day Story: Marvellous medals and South Coast Modellers
This October half term (27 October – 31 October 2025), The D-Day Story is hosting a week of engaging family-friendly activities, offering visitors a chance to explore history through play, creativity and discovery.
On Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 October, Operation: Spies and Lies returns to the museum. Families can take part in an interactive trail, completing challenges to uncover a hidden mystery object. Participants will receive an exclusive The D-Day Story bag — just ask at the front desk when you arrive.
On Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 October, the museum’s Discovery Hub will host craft activities inspired by the collection. Visitors can make their own medal to take home, explore artefacts and uniforms from the handling collection, and enjoy toys and games for under 5s. All activities are included in the standard museum admission.
On Friday 31 October, the South Coast Modellers return to the Dulverton Room with their hand-made scale models. Visitors can drop in to view the models and speak with the makers — no ticket required, and entry is free.
Running throughout the week is the Marvellous Medals Trail. Discover the medals on display and complete the trail for a chance to win either a plush Gustav pigeon or a Landing Craft Tank Airfix Kit. This activity is included in the museum admission price.
Families can also enjoy the family audio guide, designed with younger audiences in mind but suitable for all ages. It offers a deeper look at the museum’s objects and the stories of those affected by the events of June 1944. The guide is available year-round — just ask at the desk during your visit.
Leader of the council, with responsibility for culture, Cllr Steve Pitt, said: “The D-Day Story continues to inspire and educate visitors of all ages, and this half term’s programme is a brilliant way for families to connect with history through play, creativity and discovery. We are proud to support events that bring our city’s heritage to life and make it accessible to everyone.”
