Improvements to Longfield Gyratory in Trowbridge begin next week

A major programme of improvements to Longfield Gyratory in Trowbridge will begin next week, with work starting on Monday 28 July.

Preliminary work, including traffic signal refurbishment at Tesco and the strengthening of Cradle bridge underway, has already begun, but from Monday attention will focus on the gyratory.

To help minimise disruption, the work will be delivered in five planned phases, beginning in the County Way area and progressing clockwise around the gyratory. However, people should be prepared for some disruption throughout the course of the project and should allow extra time for their journeys.

The project will increase vehicle capacity on the gyratory to ease congestion and improve journey times for motorists. It will also enhance pedestrian safety and support the development of the new Trowbridge leisure centre, which is currently under construction.

Cllr Ian Thorn, Leader of Wiltshire Council, said: “These essential upgrades will help to reduce journey times, increase vehicle capacity and make it safer for both pedestrians and cyclists to move across the gyratory.

“We apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused by these works, but we have carefully planned the work in phases to minimise disruption as much as we can.

“The project will not only support the new leisure centre but also deliver long-term benefits for all road users in Trowbridge. The improvements have been modelled using projected traffic growth data for 2041, ensuring that the gyratory is future-proofed and capable of meeting the long-term needs of the community.

“We’re committed to making our roads safer, more efficient, and more accessible for everyone, and these improvements will do just that.”

One of the key parts of the project is the complete overhaul of the traffic signal system. The current manually linked signal junctions and crossings will be replaced with two advanced signal controllers, helping to coordinate the signals and enhance traffic flow, while also improving pedestrian safety.

Pedestrian access will also be improved as part of the new leisure centre development on the East Wing site at County Hall, with a new signal-controlled junction added, along with new shared use paths for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Some sections of the carriageway will also be widened to improve vehicle lane discipline and accommodate larger vehicles more effectively.

Preliminary work on the scheme – strengthening Cradle Bridge and refurbishing the Tesco traffic signals – has already begun, with the full schedule of work as follows:

  • Phase 1: 28 July – 17 October (County Way and Brown Street)
  • Phase 2: October – November (Castle Street)
  • Phase 3: November – December (County Gate to the Lamb)
  • Phase 4: January – February 2026 (Mortimer Street, County Hall, south side of the leisure centre)
  • Phase 5: February – April 2026 (East Wing opposite County Hall and north side of the leisure centre)
