New glass collection points for Fareham residents
Fareham Borough Council is pleased to announce that additional glass collection points have been introduced in strategic locations around the Borough.
Four additional glass banks were agreed as part of the Council’s pathway to compliance with Simpler Recycling legislation. The new collection points are expected to generate an additional 52 tonnes of glass recycling per year. This will bring the total number of glass banks across the Borough to 67, and total glass recycling to an estimated 2,300 tonnes of glass per year across the Borough.
The new glass collection points have been placed in easy to access areas which will cause minimal disruption to local people and are situated at:
- Portchester Castle Car Park
- Titchfield Recreation Ground
- Henry Cort Drive Car Park
- Aldi on West Street, Fareham (coming soon in April 2026)
Full compliance with Simper Recycling legislation will take a little longer in Fareham as Hampshire County Council’s current waste disposal infrastructure cannot process paper, card, metal, glass and plastics in a way that meets the new Simpler Recycling requirements. The Council cannot, therefore, collect glass from residents’ kerbsides without incurring significant additional costs. A new Materials Recycling Facility will be opening in Eastleigh in 2028, at which point the final steps toward full compliance can be made. However, in the meantime, there will be no changes to what can be recycled in Fareham.
Executive Member for Streetscene, Cllr Ian Bastable, said: “I am pleased that these new glass collection points have been introduced, as it enables residents to dispose of their glass in even more convenient locations. It also means that the Council will recycle a significant amount of additional glass which will have a positive environmental impact. Once the new Materials Recycling Facility opens in Eastleigh, we will be able to be fully complaint with the Simpler Recycling requirements set out by government.
