Opportunity to comment on Milborne St Andrew road safety plans
Comments are invited on proposals to improve safety on the A354 through Milborne St Andrew.
Dorset Council is running the public consultation is open until 24 April 2026.
Views are sought on a new traffic management scheme designed to slow vehicles travelling through the village centre and make the area safer for pedestrians. The A354 is an important link between Blandford and Dorchester, carrying heavy through‑traffic as well as local journeys.
Concerns have been raised in recent years about drivers exceeding the 30mph limit and the risk this poses to people living in the village.
The scheme has been developed following a request from Milborne St Andrew Parish Council and will be funded through contributions from local development. Options under consideration include:
- widening the footway next to the pub by building out into the road. This would provide more space for pedestrians and a priority ‘give way’ system will slow down vehicles through the village centre
- new uncontrolled crossing points, with five potential locations identified
- improved gateway lines and signs at village entry points to encourage lower speeds
- refreshed road markings, including edge‑of‑carriageway lines to highlight hazards and reduce driving speeds
- repainted bus stop markings
Dorset Council trialled a layout in October 2024, temporarily narrowing the road and giving priority to westbound traffic. Data gathered showed the approach was feasible and helped shape the proposals now going out to consultation.
Cllr Jon Andrews, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Place Services, said:
“This is a long‑awaited change that could significantly enhance the safety and wellbeing of local residents.
“The information gathered through the trial has helped shape a scheme that aims to work for all. This consultation is an important step in making sure those plans are right, so please take the time to have your say.”
