Residents who, for a number of reasons, may be unable to visit their local library in person are encouraged to find out more about the council’s home library service.

This is a free service where the local library arranges for volunteers to take books to residents in their homes. The service helps residents who are frail, have a disability or health conditions to continue accessing library services and can also help to combat loneliness in the process.

Volunteers work with Wiltshire Council library staff and are DBS checked. They will visit regularly at agreed times to deliver a selection of books to people tailored to their preferences. People can also request specific authors, titles and formats.

In addition to the service being free to use, there are no overdue charges.

The council is also looking for people to volunteer to help deliver the home library service. People interested in finding out more should contact their local library.

A resident who uses the home library service said: “The service is a lifeline – I can’t get to a library and reading takes me out of myself.”

Another resident said: “Excellent service, great volunteers. Makes a positive difference to my quality of life.”

Cllr Mel Jacob, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities, Engagement and Corporate Services, said: “Reading can have a positive impact on our mental health and these regular visits can help people in our communities who are isolated and experiencing loneliness.

“Volunteers can also help signpost residents to other support services, and I would like everyone who could benefit from this service to know about it.

“Our fantastic volunteers make this service possible, and they are making a real difference to lives of people in our communities.
