A magical new addition to the Pride of Portsmouth art trail is heading out on tour this summer, with the unicorn set to visit libraries, family events and community venues across the city.

The colourful sculpture is inspired by the sea unicorn featured in Portsmouth’s historic city crest.

While the trail’s 45 lion sculptures remain in fixed locations across the city, the unicorn will travel to different areas of the city throughout the summer, giving residents extra opportunities to discover this unique artwork and take part in Portsmouth100 celebrations.

The unicorn was created by local artist Emilie-Jane Rivers-Martin in collaboration with children who take part in HAF Portsmouth. Its design features a constellation of stars inspired by the voices, storis and experiences of young people from across the city.

Councillor Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council, said:

“The Pride of Portsmouth trail is all about celebrating our city, encouraging people to explore Portsmouth and creating memorable experiences for residents and visitors alike.

“The unicorn is a fantastic addition to the trail and gives families another reason to get out and discover different parts of the city this summer. It’s a celebration of the creativity and imagination of young people in Portsmouth and a great example of how Portsmouth100 is bringing communities together.”

The Pride of Portsmouth trail is a free public art event delivered by Portsmouth City Council in partnership with Wild in Art as part of Portsmouth100, celebrating 100 years since Portsmouth was granted city status.

Running until 13 September 2026, the trail features 45 large lion sculptures and one roaming unicorn, all designed by artists and inspired by the people, places and stories of Portsmouth.
