Residents, businesses, traders and community groups are invited to help shape the future of street trading in the borough by taking part in a consultation on the introduction of a new Street Trading Policy.

Street trading can play an important role in supporting local businesses, increasing choice for customers and helping create vibrant town and village centres.

The proposed policy sets out a clear and consistent approach to how street trading applications will be considered and the standards expected of traders. It does not introduce street trading controls to any new roads or locations.

Instead, the policy explains how Woking Borough Council will exercise its existing powers and responsibilities, providing greater clarity, consistency and transparency for applicants, traders and the wider community.

Speaking about the consultation, Cllr Ann-Marie Barker, Leader of Woking Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Licensing, said: “Street trading can bring real benefits to communities, supporting local enterprise and adding to the vibrancy of our town and village centres.

“At the same time, it’s important that trading takes place in a safe and responsible way that protects access to public spaces and considers the needs of residents, businesses and visitors.

“To help us develop a balanced policy, we want to hear from as many people as possible before making any decisions. Your feedback will help shape how street trading is managed in the future.”

The consultation is open to residents, street traders, local businesses, visitors, community groups and anyone with an interest in how street trading is managed within the borough.

The eight-week consultation closes Sunday 15 November 2026.

All feedback received will be carefully reviewed before a report is presented to the Licensing Committee, which will consider any changes, before deciding whether to adopt the policy.
