Officers from the Specialist Operations Unit have been carrying out proactive patrols in Middleton town centre following recent reports of anti-social behaviour around Middleton Bus Station and Middleton Gardens, including the misuse of electric bikes.

At around 7.30pm yesterday (19 August), officers on patrol in Middleton Gardens spotted a Sur-Ron style electric bike being ridden in the area. Officers detained the rider and seized the bike.

A 16-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance and failing to provide a breath sample. He remains in custody for questioning.

The seized bike will be destroyed.

Middleton and Heywood Neighbourhood Inspector Graham Cooke said: “We have received a number of reports from residents and businesses regarding anti-social behaviour involving electric bikes in Middleton town centre. This arrest demonstrates our commitment to tackling this behaviour and keeping our communities safe.

“Many people are unaware that most Sur-Ron style electric bikes are classed as motor vehicles. This means they cannot legally be ridden on public roads, footpaths, parks or other public places. Those who choose to ride these bikes illegally risk having them seized and ultimately destroyed.”

Anyone with information about anti-social behaviour in the area is encouraged to report it via our website or by calling 101. In an emergency, always dial 999.
