A Skills Bootcamp initiative is proving a success in Wiltshire, helping residents gain new skills and secure employment in a range of sectors.

These short, flexible courses which are government funded, are designed to support learners into new job roles or upskill them for career progression.

So far, 23 sector-based courses, led by Wiltshire Council, have launched, welcoming 311 learners across Wiltshire and Swindon. More courses, delivered by a variety of training providers, will start between now and March 2026, with further opportunities expected in the new financial year, subject to funding.

Learners are already seeing life-changing results. One participant, who completed an HGV Skills Bootcamp with Wiltshire Transport Training and Development Ltd said: “I knew the courses I wanted to do would be expensive, so I started looking into Skills Bootcamps. When I spoke to Wiltshire Council, I found out I could do the HGV driving course for free!

“They’ve given me an amazing opportunity to build a career I’m passionate about. It’s a chance to earn a wage while doing something I love.”

Another learner, who joined a Cyber Security Skills Bootcamp with Skills Ladder, shared: “I found the course through the Government’s ‘Find a Course’ website and was lucky to get a space. My tutor was dedicated and enthusiastic, and even helped me secure a new role. I’m now on a Level 3 Software Development Apprenticeship, which is perfect because I love coding. Skills Bootcamps are a great way to change career paths and learn the skills you need.”

Cllr Jon Hubbard, Wiltshire Council Cabinet Member for Education and Skills said: “Skills Bootcamps are transforming lives by giving people the chance to gain valuable qualifications and move into rewarding careers. We’re proud to offer these opportunities locally and encourage anyone interested to find out more.”

Councillor Adorabelle Amaral-Shaikh, Cabinet Member for Education at Swindon Borough Council, said: “It’s inspiring to see the difference Skills Bootcamps are already making for residents across Swindon and Wiltshire. Whether someone is looking to change career, return to work, or progress in their current role, these fully funded courses provide real, practical pathways into employment.

“Supporting this initiative is a key part of our commitment to create a Fairer Swindon, where everyone has the chance to thrive.”

Further courses will be available from next spring when new funding is confirmed. Eligible learners must be aged 19+, live or work in Wiltshire or Swindon, and have the right to work in the UK.
