The first major phase of Wiltshire Council’s A3102 Safer Road Scheme has now been completed, bringing significant road safety improvements to the junction of the A3102 Calne bypass and Stanier Road.

The £6.98m A3102 Safer Road Scheme, funded by the Department for Transport through the Safer Roads Fund, is bringing a range of measures to the route between J16 of the M4 and Melksham.

The programme was developed after the A3102 was identified as having a high number of fatal and serious collisions. It aims to reduce the risk and severity of crashes along the route.

The completion of works at the Calne bypass and Stanier Road junction marks an important milestone in the wider programme. Further major improvements are planned at the A3102/A342 junctions at Bromham, with work on this site due to begin in October and be completed by December this year. This site will see a new island junction to make the right turn safer for A3102 traffic, some widening of the carriageway, a formalised pedestrian crossing, and improvements to the A3102 approach.

A third large site at the A3102/A342 southern junction, which will start in early 2027, will see a new roundabout installed, improved safety to the right turn lane for traffic into the A3102, the removal of the non-standard right turn island, and a speed limit reduction to 50mph.

Elsewhere along the route, improvements include upgraded road markings and signage, junction enhancements, pedestrian and cycle crossing enhancements, visibility improvements through vegetation clearance, shared-use paths, and other targeted safety measures at locations identified through detailed road safety analysis.

The scheme supports Wiltshire Council’s commitment to improving road safety and aligns with the Vision Zero ambition, shared by the Wiltshire and Swindon Road Safety Partnership, to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on Wiltshire and Swindon’s roads.

By tackling known collision hotspots and improving safety for all road users, including motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, the scheme represents a significant investment in preventing future tragedies and making everyday journeys safer.

The A3102 scheme forms part of a wider national Safer Roads Fund programme, which supports improvements on some of England’s highest-risk A-roads. The route was selected following analysis by the Road Safety Foundation, which identified opportunities for targeted interventions that could significantly reduce the number and severity of collisions over the coming years.
