Green light for quicker, more reliable bus journeys as major road improvements finish

Major improvements to bus travel in Portsmouth have now been completed at Kingston Road and Lake Road, delivering faster, more reliable public transport journeys for residents and visitors.

The scheme, funded through the Government’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), is part of Portsmouth City Council’s wider investment in public transport, helping buses move more efficiently through the city and improving journey reliability for passengers.

The improvements include resurfacing the road, upgraded traffic signals and a new part-time bus lane designed to reduce delays along one of Portsmouth’s busiest transport corridors.

By improving journey times and reliability, the scheme will support bus operators in maintaining punctual services while encouraging more people to choose public transport for everyday journeys. More people travelling by bus can also help reduce congestion on Portsmouth’s roads, particularly at peak times, while supporting improvements in air quality for everyone who lives, works and travels in the city.

Councillor Peter Candlish, Cabinet Member for Transport at Portsmouth City Council, said: “We’re delighted to see these improvements completed and ready to benefit passengers across Portsmouth. Bus travel in the city has been transformed in recent years through better infrastructure, improved services and a stronger focus on the passenger experience.

These latest changes will help make journeys quicker and more reliable, encouraging even more people to choose the bus and supporting our ambition for a cleaner, greener and better-connected city.”

The scheme forms part of a wider package of bus priority improvements being delivered across Portsmouth through BSIP funding, alongside investment in new bus shelters, accessibility upgrades, passenger information improvements and measures to enhance the overall passenger experience.

As an additional enhancement to the project, a new community pocket park is also being created on Lake Road following donations secured specifically for the benefit of local residents. The space will feature new trees, seating, planting, wildflower areas and landscaping improvements, helping to create a greener and more welcoming environment for the neighbourhood.

Residents will also have the opportunity to get involved through a community planting day, with further details to be announced in the coming weeks.
