Portsbridge roundabout resurfacing to take place overnight from June
Essential highway resurfacing will take place overnight at Portsbridge roundabout from Monday 1 June, Portsmouth City Council has announced.
The work, carried out by the Council’s highways contractor Colas, is expected to take up to 10 nights to complete, weather permitting, with activity taking place overnight between 9pm and 5am from Sunday/Monday night to Thursday night, to help reduce disruption on one of the city’s busiest routes.
The resurfacing is part of the council’s ongoing maintenance programme to keep Portsmouth’s road network safe and in good condition. Portsbridge roundabout has been identified for improvement work.
To allow the work to be carried out safely, the roundabout will be closed to regular traffic overnight, with clearly signed diversion routes in place. The work will be delivered in phases, starting from 1 June.
Councillor Peter Candlish, Cabinet Member for Transport at Portsmouth City Council, said: “Portsbridge roundabout is a key route into and out of the city. It’s important we maintain it before its condition deteriorates. This all part of our long term, preventative approach to maintaining the city’s road network, that was recently recognised and rewarded by the government’s only triple green rating for road maintenance on the South Coast.
“We know this essential work will cause some disruption but carrying it out overnight helps keep Portsmouth moving during the day and reduces the impact on residents, businesses and emergency services.”
During the programme:
- Some local routes, including access arrangements for nearby residential roads, will temporarily close overnight.
- Some bus services will be diverted and some local bus stops will be temporarily closed overnight. Passengers may experience delays and are asked to check with their operator and plan ahead before travelling.
Carrying out the work overnight will help keep traffic moving during the day and reduce the impact on emergency services and key journeys through the city.
While every effort will be made to minimise disruption, residents may experience some noise, particularly during the early stages when the existing road surface is removed.
The Council thanks residents, businesses and road users for their patience while this essential maintenance is completed.
