Wiltshire Council has praised Wessex Internet for exceeding 40% of its connectivity targets in the roll out of lightning-fast broadband to around 18,700 homes and businesses across South Wiltshire.

This milestone has been achieved in under two years of a five-year contract, marking a significant and impressive step forward in delivering improved digital infrastructure to rural communities.

The contract is managed by Building Digital UK (BDUK), Wiltshire Council works in partnership with Wessex Internet to support the rollout of full fibre broadband across South Wiltshire and helps maximise the benefits for local communities and businesses.

As a result, more than 7,500 homes and businesses can now benefit from gigabit capable broadband, helping to future-proof connectivity and support economic growth across the region.

Wessex Internet was awarded the £18.8 million contract in 2024 to deliver Project Gigabit, a publicly funded programme to install full fibre-to-the premises (FTTP) infrastructure across South Wiltshire. This technology ensures that fibre optic cables run directly to homes or businesses rather than stopping at roadside cabinets. Construction began in September 2024.

Cllr Helen Belcher, Wiltshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Regeneration and Assets, said: “We are delighted with what Wessex Internet has achieved at this early stage of the programme. Their work represents the very best of rural delivery: ambitious, collaborative, and community focused.

“One of our key priorities is to ensure our communities have the infrastructure they need to thrive. Wessex Internet’s strong partnerships, commitment to public engagement, and high standards of customer service set a benchmark for others to follow.”

Hector Gibson Fleming, CEO of Wessex Internet, commented: “A brilliant milestone to hit, and a testament to the hard work on the ground.”
