Wiltshire Council has welcomed a positive Ofsted inspection of its Family and Community Learning service with learners feeling valued as individuals and helped to develop confidence in their knowledge and abilities to achieve their goals.

The inspection judged the service to meet the expected standard across all areas inspected, with safeguarding standards also met.

A number of strengths were highlighted, including:

  • Strong support for disadvantaged learners and those facing barriers to education.
  • Flexible learning opportunities delivered in community venues and online.
  • Tailored provision for learners with SEND, care-experienced learners and those learning English as a second language.
  • Learners developing confidence, independence and skills to support further learning, volunteering and employment.
  • Positive partnerships that help the service respond to local community needs.

Cllr Jon Hubbard, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills, said: “We’re delighted that Ofsted has recognised the positive impact of our Family and Community Learning service and the dedication of our staff, tutors and partners. Adult learning can transform lives, helping people gain new skills, improve their confidence and wellbeing, and access new opportunities.

“We are proud of the inclusive support available to learners across Wiltshire and remain committed to continuously improving the service.”

The report praised the impact of the service on learners, stating: “Most learners develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours that they need to participate more fully in their communities, engage confidently with professionals and increase their independence.”

Inspectors also found that learners feel welcome, valued and safe, and benefit from personalised support that helps them overcome barriers such as low confidence, anxiety and social isolation.

Family and Community Learning offers a range of courses for Wiltshire residents, including essential skills, family learning, health and wellbeing, employability training and English language courses, delivered in communities across the county and online.
