Maintenance works on the Itchen Bridge are due to continue for the remainder of August as the scheme enters its final phases.

Southampton City Council and our Highways partner Balfour Beatty Living Places are pleased to confirm that the carriageway resurfacing has been successfully completed, allowing the removal of the temporary 20mph speed limit across the bridge.

Night-time working with bridge closures to vehicles from 8pm to 6am will continue to operate, with the bridge remaining open to pedestrians and cyclists throughout. During these times, our teams will be working on the bridge expansion joints, drainage connections and all associated cycle marking and lining which will need to be finished before the project can be declared fully complete.

We are carrying out as much work as we can during these closures, including, subject to temperatures, the replacement of all the severely deteriorated carriageway surfacing in the adjoining Cooper’s Lane next week.

We will confirm the date of completion, and if this will also require any night working during the start of September, as soon as possible.

Councillor Jacqui Rayment, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “We’re now entering the final stages of this important maintenance project and are pleased that the main drainage, footway and resurfacing work on the bridge has been completed. While there are still some essential finishing works to carry out, including works on the expansion joints, drainage connections and road markings, we’re very close now to completing the project.

“I’d like to thank residents, businesses and everyone who uses the bridge for their patience and understanding while these works have been taking place. We know the disruption has been challenging at times, but these improvements will help ensure the Itchen Bridge remains safe, reliable and fit for the future. We’re looking forward to bringing the project to a successful conclusion as soon as possible.”
