Portsmouth City Council to mark Commonwealth Day with civic flag raising ceremony
Portsmouth City Council will mark Commonwealth Day with a flag‑raising ceremony on Monday 9 March 2026 at 9.30am, outside the Civic Offices in Guildhall Square.
The ceremony, which will last about 30–40 minutes, will celebrate the diversity, shared values, and global connections of the Commonwealth under this year’s theme, ‘Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth’.
Around 50 guests are expected to attend, alongside community representatives who will raise flags on behalf of several Commonwealth nations and organisations. The ceremony will also include a Commonwealth Day message from His Majesty the King.
Councillor Steve Pitt, leader of the council, said: “I’m pleased that Portsmouth is once again marking Commonwealth Day as part of our civic calendar. This ceremony recognises the shared values and long‑standing connections that link our city with others around the world, and residents are welcome to attend.”
The event will conclude with a performance celebrating the Commonwealth’s rich heritage.
Members of the public are welcome to attend and watch the ceremony.
