A new stone bench commemorating the International Brigades and those from Portsmouth who fought fascism during the Spanish Civil War has been installed in Victoria Park.

The bench, made of granite, can be found next to the Worker’s Memorial, in the northeast area of the park near the play area.

It also recognises the long-standing links between Portsmouth’s labour movement and the values of international solidarity, democracy and social justice.

The park’s newest feature follows discussions with local trade union representatives and community groups, and provides a lasting place for reflection, remembrance and education within one of the city’s most historic public spaces.

Cllr Lee Hunt, Portsmouth City Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Leisure & Sport, said: “This new bench serves as an important tribute to those who volunteered to defend freedom abroad, just as many are doing the same in Ukraine today, and to the generations who have continued to promote these ideals in Portsmouth.”
