CCTV has been installed at a fly tipping hotspot in Portsmouth to tackle the problem head on.

Portsmouth City Council has installed 14 CCTV cameras at Buckingham Green in Buckland as part of ongoing efforts to tackle fly tipping and misuse of bin stores, to help keep the area clean and safe for residents.

The action follows feedback from the local community and multiple reports of waste dumping in the area.

Fly tipping is the illegal disposal of waste and can occur in streets, alleyways, open spaces, on private land, beside bins and at recycling points.

Cllr Darren Sanders, Cabinet Member for Housing and Tackling Homelessness, said: “As a social housing landlord, we have listened to Portsmouth Homes residents who told us that fly tipping had become a real concern in the area. We are pleased to be taking positive action to address the issue.

“Residents have welcomed the installation of these cameras and are pleased to see the council taking their concerns seriously. We are committed to keeping our neighbourhoods clean, safe and welcoming places to live.”

The new CCTV cameras will help deter people from fly tipping and gather evidence if needed to support enforcement action.

The council is also encouraging residents to use the My Portsmouth app to anonymously report issues such as fly tipping, abandoned vehicles and drainage problems. The app also provides information on bulky waste collections and bin collection days.

Large items can be collected through the council’s bulky waste service, while other materials can be taken to the Portsmouth Recycling Centre or disposed of using the council’s waste and recycling services.
