Wiltshire Council environmental health officer wins national Rising Star award
Wiltshire Council Environmental Health practitioner Milly Strong has received national recognition after winning the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) Rising Star Award, a prestigious accolade celebrating emerging talent in the profession.
The CIEH Excellence Awards celebrate outstanding achievement, innovation and dedication, recognising professionals and teams shaping the future of environmental health. The Rising Star Award recognises individuals at the beginning of their careers who demonstrate exceptional promise, initiative and the ability to positively influence public health, wellbeing and environmental outcomes.
Milly joined Wiltshire Council in October 2024 and has already made a significant contribution to the council’s Environmental Control and Protection Team, working across air quality monitoring, public health engagement and statutory Local Air Quality Management.
A key focus of her role has been supporting the delivery of the Wiltshire Community Air Network – a countywide citizen science project using more than 100 air pollution monitors to improve understanding of air quality across Wiltshire. The project supports real-time data reporting, increased public awareness and the development of future policy.
Alongside this work, Milly has rapidly developed her professional expertise. She has contributed to the council’s 2025 Annual Status Report, supported air quality surveys and data analysis, helped progress the removal of three Air Quality Management Areas, and contributed to the installation of a real-time monitor in Salisbury.
She has also achieved distinction-level academic results while studying environmental health, demonstrating a strong technical understanding, clear communication skills and a commitment to professional development.
Cllr Paul Sample JP, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We are incredibly proud of Milly and delighted that her talent, commitment and impact have been recognised at a national level. This award reflects both her professionalism and the impact she has already made early in her career.
“Milly brings energy, dedication and a real commitment to improving environmental health outcomes for our communities. Her work on the Wiltshire Community Air Network is helping us build a clearer picture of air quality across the county and support informed decision-making.
“This is a well-deserved achievement and highlights the strength of the work being delivered by our Environmental Control and Protection Team.”
Milly Strong said: “I am honoured to receive the CIEH Rising Star Award. Environmental health has such an important role in protecting communities, improving wellbeing and supporting healthier places to live. I am grateful to my colleagues at Wiltshire Council for their support and encouragement, and I am excited to continue developing my skills and contributing to work that makes a practical difference for residents.”
